A Day of Mourning for Latvia
At least 51 people have died as a result of a supermarket roof collapsing in Riga.
Was it the builders’ fault? Did the authorities turn a blind eye to a building they knew wouldn’t pass regulations? Or was it because there was a roof garden being built on top of the supermarket?
Witnesses said the store continued to serve customers an hour after the alarm went off. Staff stayed and continued to work just because there was no order from management to leave. Customers were also not evacuated. This would have cost the shop money and no one wanted to take responsibility for a possible loss of cash for the Maxima chain. The staff were simply afraid of getting fined or getting fired.
What the hell is going on, people of Latvia? Do our lives cost less than a monthly salary?
There’s always a human factor in every tragedy. Some of us are just unlucky but this is not the case here.I know what I’ll be teaching my son today after I pick him up from school: when you hear the alarm – run. If there are people around you, make them leave too. If someone tells you you’re not allowed, ignore them and leave. If the doors are closed, break them and leave.
It saves lives.
R.I.P. to those lost in this senseless tragedy.
